SSPO
A dawn photoshoot commissioned by the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation at the stunning location of Loch Lomond. As the early morning mist slowly lifted from the water, the far bank and distant hills began to emerge, bathed in the soft light of the approaching sunrise. The peaceful scene was set for a perfect shoot, capturing the serene beauty of one of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes.
However, as is often the case with outdoor photography in Scotland, the weather took an unexpected turn, and soon the skies opened up with a torrential downpour. Undeterred by the rain, I adapted quickly, setting up multiple umbrellas to protect both my camera equipment and myself, though only partially. This type of challenging environment is something I’ve grown accustomed to as a professional photographer in Scotland, where the weather can be as dramatic and unpredictable as the landscapes.
However, the unpredictable Scottish weather had other plans, and soon the clear skies gave way to heavy rain. As the downpour intensified, I had to adapt quickly, lying low to the ground and sheltering both my camera gear and myself under multiple umbrellas. Despite these challenges, the smoked salmon image, the focal point of the image, emphased the link between the rugged, natural environment and the product itself.
This shoot was a great example of how outdoor photography often requires flexibility and a keen understanding of both technical and environmental factors. As a photographer, my job is to work with the elements, not against them, ensuring that I capture the essence of the moment, no matter the conditions. The rain, rather than being a hindrance, added a layer of authenticity to the shoot, showcasing the rugged beauty of Scotland’s wild landscapes.
