Castle of Mey
I had the pleasure of making a flying visit to the Castle of Mey, located on the stunning east coast of Scotland, to photograph both the staff and the breathtaking environment surrounding this historic site. The Castle of Mey, once the beloved holiday home of the late Queen Mother, holds the distinction of being the most northerly castle on the British mainland. The journey itself was an unforgettable experience, as the road winds through some of the most scenic and dramatic landscapes that Scotland has to offer.
The castle and its gardens sit perched on the edge of cliffs, overlooking the Pentland Firth, with views stretching out towards Orkney. The natural beauty and historic charm of the castle made it a truly remarkable location to photograph. The images I captured aimed to reflect not only the grandeur of the castle and its stunning gardens but also the dedication and warmth of the staff who maintain this historic treasure.
It’s well known that HRH King Charles has a deep affection for the Castle of Mey and its original features, including a particularly quirky detail: the kitchen fridge. Rumor has it that despite its age—dating back to the 1950s—the Prince refuses to replace this piece of vintage kitchen equipment, appreciating its historical significance and connection to the castle’s past. This small but charming anecdote speaks to the care and preservation of the castle's history, something that I aimed to convey in my photographs of the interiors.
Photographing such a unique and historically significant location was a real honor. The combination of heritage photography, capturing the staff in their working environment, and the stunning natural surroundings made for an incredibly rewarding shoot.
