…But now unroof'd their Palace stands,
Their sceptre's fall'n to other hands;
Fallen indeed, and to the earth,
Whence grovelling reptiles take their birth…

When Burns visited Stirling in August 1787, he made the bold choice to engrave his critical sentiments about the town on a window pane at Wingate’s Inn, now known as the Golden Lion Hotel. In just ten lines, he encapsulated the essence of a once mighty place, where the Stewart kings ruled Scotland, which had lost its power and prestige. The imagery of a roofless palace starkly illustrates the town's fall from grace, signifying not only a physical decline but a deeper cultural and political erosion.

The poem was particularly controversial, as it critiqued the ruling Hanoverian kings, especially George III. Fearing legal repercussions for his candid expression, Burns was compelled to return to Stirling and break the glass to avoid prosecution, a testament to the powerful impact of his words and the era's political climate.

As a professional photographer based in Edinburgh, I often find inspiration in the rich history and vibrant stories of places like Stirling. My photography aims to capture the essence of historical sites and their narratives, including the majestic views of the Stirling Castle and its surrounding landscapes.

I strive to create visual representations that tell the story of these locations, echoing the sentiments expressed by Burns and connecting contemporary audiences to Scotland’s rich past. Each photograph serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of figures like Burns, inviting viewers to explore the beauty and complexity of Scotland’s heritage.

If you're looking to collaborate on a project that highlights the historical significance of a location through powerful imagery, I would be delighted to discuss how we can work together to create compelling visual narratives that resonate with audiences and enrich their understanding of our shared history.
